BOARD WINTER 2016
4
As 2015 comes to a close, we can all look back upon a year of progress,
continuing challenges and a refreshing year change for our region.
In step with unprecedented funding commitments and an historic alignment of
political will to tackle the region’s transit crisis, our November 16 Transportation
Summit:
Delivering Transit, Delivering Prosperity
, brought together a powerful
mix of region-builders and transit experts to discuss the urgency of turning
dollars into action and action into jobs. Our mayor, premier and prime minister
all agree that alleviating traffic congestion and gridlock is crucial for our
regional and national economy. The Board will continue to lead this discussion
with all levels of government, local municipalities and Toronto region businesses
to ensure bold regional transit plans move forward. Many thanks to SNC-Lavalin
and all of our sponsors for helping us bring this critical dialogue to the fore.
Our 2015 Business Excellence Awards inspired and humbled us, as we
recognized the depth and breadth of businesses nominated. These companies
continue to demonstrate that the Toronto region is a fantastic place to start and
run a business. The Board is grateful to our volunteer judges and our generous
awards gala sponsors whose support enabled us to celebrate our local business
leaders and innovators.
The event of all events at the Board is our Annual Dinner, the region’s premier
business gala, presented by Odgers Berndtson. For the 128
th
edition, we are
delighted to welcome Linda Hasenfratz, CEO of Linamar, to our podium. We are
also honoured to bestow our Toronto Region Builder Award upon a most respected
business leader and community builder: Ed Clark, former President and CEO of
TD Bank Group and current Business Advisor to the Premier of Ontario. Tickets
are going quickly, so be sure to secure yours today at

A new year provides a window to anticipate and embrace change. Our cover
story examines how rapid change wrought by disruptive technology is not
only shaking up but also generating unprecedented opportunities in the
region’s automotive sector. While some pundits predicted this sector would
never recapture its former glory, innovations right here in our region promise
to reinvigorate this employment-rich sector in transformative ways.
Year in and year out, Toronto Region Board of Trade members are heads
down, focused on meeting their business objectives. We hope this season
affords you the opportunity to take a step back and reflect, both professionally
and personally, on your achievements in 2015 and your plans for another
successful year ahead. Most important, we wish you a lovely holiday season
and a very happy New Year.
Warm regards,
WINTER 2016
